Virtual Schools- Diversity Panel

I just finished presenting my panel session at the Diversity in Online Learning Pre-Conference at Virtual Schools Symposium of NACOL.
Indeed, it is the first session on diversity at NACOL and Virtual School Symposium! We are working on trying to build momentum to enable more diverse students be more present in the k-12 virtual schools.
Arrived in Austin, TX Saturday Nov 14, 2009 and speaking Sunday afternoon. Pre-conference is five hours with insightful and passionate educators from around the country.

What is diversity and how do we provide safe and inclusive spaces for ?
- Race
- Class
- Gender
- Sexual orientation
- Disabilities- Different abilities
- At-risk youth (alternative schools)
Discovering where it is happening and how to make this happen more!
Great discussions about different programs around the country serving
- Native Americans
- GLBT virtual high school
- Inner city leadership
- Credit Recovery integrated into virtual schools
Realize we need to break the deficit model for all groups which are under represented
- As an example, GLBT Virtual School philosophy(David Glick)
- Provide safe environment, non deficit, instead positive model
- Support groups to build community
