21st Century Learning thru Video, Audio and Storytelling!
In two back to back sessions, Dr. Kathy King was met by standing room only crowds at the 2010 NCEA Conference in Minneapolis MN on April 6, 2010.Dr. King says,
My first exciting co-presentation with math teacher Thomas Hottinger on podcasting and vodcasting had a standing room only crowd. I figured, OK teachers of varying technology expertise are catching on to great potential of using these strategies. Terrific.
And we had a wonderful session- interactive, good questions. Plus, Tom and I complemented each other so well: The professor with 5 years of podcasting talking abut strategy, big picture and pedagogy… The math teacher talking about what worked and didn’t work with his classes, and how to guide students, etc…
So I was very excited and I skipped the long lunch lines to get to my next session early and found the room jam packed, people sitting in the aisles and flowing out the doors already. I went over to check the sign to make sure it was my room! Indeed it was.
Dodging bodies and book bags I made it to the front of the room to set up. It is the first time I have EVER started a session early, but there was no reason to wait.. no one else could fit in the room. We had every available spot, sat or stood upon. Eager? I’d say! The topic…..
Well I have a story to tell you….
Which is the point, the topic of the 2nd session was Digital StoryTelling and the focus was on elementary level learners, with applications across content areas and other levels provided as well.
Dr. King displayed examples of digital story telling, and talked about how to integrate it fully into our curriculum and standards. Together the group discussed rubrics, facilitation of collaborative projects, free resources, inexpensive resources, 21st century learning, and much more. From the specific, to the big picture, examples and project models, to analyzing student artifacts to determine learning objectives and content area standards met Kathy led the group in pulling apart and then reassembling a good-to-go Monday morning student project approach!
Dr. King described the highlight of the 2nd session,
As a presenter I watch my participants and ask questions to make sure they understand what is happening. But with such a large crowd I could not even see the people 2/3 back in the room and could not walk down the aisles like I usually do. However we did just fine, and I asked a lot more questions and keep calling on different people around the room whenever I saw hands.
Therefore, when so many people came up afterwards to thank me and tell me how the session gave them direction and specifics as to what to do next: That was a golden outcome for me.
I always emphasize in my sessions that whether you are novice, expert or in between you are in the right place. We want to demystify technology and let every teacher capture it and scaffold their teaching expertise with these new possibilities. How wonderful to see faces a glow with the vision having become theirs as well!
