Faculty Success – Developing a Research and Publication Agenda

ezine article logoAnyone associated with higher education will acknowledge that tenure track faculty have to perform a fantastic balancing act. Compared to an administrative or line role in an organization, higher education faculty have tremendous autonomy and freedom. However, they face competing demands of many different (and good) opportunities, and for them the stakes are always high. Help is here! This article introduces a powerful strategy for staying on track in the research strand of this competitive journey.

Building a Research Agenda.

Strangely enough, when entering their first tenure track position, often the only research faculty has pursued is their one dissertation. Yes, that is one project over the course of years, with one massive “publication”. Nonetheless, once on the tenure track, faculty have the demand looming over them to publish or perish- and they are solely responsible for their success or failure.

Research Topics.

The first step in taming this unruly situation is to consider the natural extensions or additions to your prior research. Or, if your research is not directly related to your department, the first step is to access a topic which bridges the two and will be respected by your colleagues,

I like to use a large piece of paper and start writing topics in various areas of the sheet. This activity becomes the process of throwing your research ideas down on paper and seeing if there is a logical concept map among your prospective endeavors. Alternatively, one might have a pattern in mind from the start. If so, begin the concept map as a base structure and see how more activities would be connected to this established core or set.

Publication Goals.

Many faculty think that each research project results in a single publication: but seasoned researchers realize there are, in fact, many publishing opportunities to be extracted from ……

Dr. King as Commencement Speaker and Award Recipient

On May 11,2010, Dr. Kathleen P. King heads to the Philadelphia suburbs to begin a week of celebrations in her homecoming to Pennsylvania Institute of Technology.

On Wednesday she will be receiving an Outstanding Alumni award from the two-year college where she studied engineering and also began her career teaching in higher education (1990). Especially exciting for King is that the awards breakfast will also honor 2010 graduates who are receiving awards.

She says,

Taking my place among lifelong learners honored by Pennsylvania Institute of Technology (PIT) during 2010 Commencement is a distinct honor. It is staggering to realize my higher education career began here 20 years ago when I enrolled for classes to merge my science background (BA in Biochemistry Brown University) with my new-found passion for computing. This was in the days of MS-DOS 5.0 and MS-Windows 3.1 just emerging on the scene. Much has changed in 20 years, but the need for continuing learning is stronger than ever. I applaud the dedication of all the PIT 2010 award recipients and graduates.

Saturday May 15, 2010 is the commencement ceremony for Pennsylvania Institute of Technology (PIT). Dr. King has the distinct honor of being the 2010 commencement speaker to share a vision of opportunity, hope and accomplishment with the graduates, families, friends and faculty. Kathy shares her perspective,

PIT is Hope and New Opportunities. Graduation at PIT is always an energizing and emotional event. This is a college which is dedicated to new opportunities, new hopes and possibilities. every graduate has their personal story of overcoming obstacles and dreams which seemed impossible until they encountered this unique learning community. My national and international experience which has developed since I moved on from PIT in 1997, continues to increase my appreciation for the work and impact of this institution and dedicated faculty.

PIT gave me great gifts during my six years there:

  • I continue to say that I met some of the best college teachers in the world at PIT.
  • My appreciation of open enrollment grows with each year.
  • I frequently recall and use examples of PIT students who risked much to step up to the challenge of entering a college career as first generation college students and breaking past patterns of oppression…..

21st Century Learning thru Video, Audio and Storytelling!

In two back to back sessions, Dr. Kathy King was met by standing room only crowds at the 2010 NCEA Conference in Minneapolis MN on April 6, 2010.

Dr. King says,

My first exciting co-presentation with math teacher Thomas Hottinger on podcasting and vodcasting had a standing room only crowd. I figured, OK teachers of varying technology expertise are catching on to great potential of using these strategies. Terrific.

And we had a wonderful session- interactive, good questions. Plus, Tom and I complemented each other so well: The professor with 5 years of podcasting talking abut strategy, big picture and pedagogy… The math teacher talking about what worked and didn’t work with his classes, and how to guide students, etc…

So I was very excited and I skipped the long lunch lines to get to my next session early and found the room jam packed, people sitting in the aisles and flowing out the doors already. I went over to check the sign to make sure it was my room! Indeed it was.

Dodging bodies and book bags I made it to the front of the room to set up. It is the first time I have EVER started a session early, but there was no reason to wait.. no one else could fit in the room. We had every available spot, sat……

The WE LEARN Empowerment Experience-

Yes Conferences can be empowering!

In early March, I had the pleasure of participating in the WE LEARN Conference again this year. In a rare synchronicity, it was held in RI again like the 2009 event was. But this year’s conference outstripped even the power of the prior WE LEARN conferences I had attended.

What is it that makes WE LEARN such a life changing event for the women who participate in it?

In this short article, I describe the first of several events which capture the power of empowerment as seen in the lives of a few participants I was close to that week.

My goals in sharing this article are several

  1. That I chronicle and remind us all of the power of professional conferences for personal and professional development,
  2. That readers’ passion for teaching and learning will be……………

The Power of Learning from Inquiry Teacher Research as a Professional Development Tool in Multilingual Schools

A New Book in the Adult Education Special Topics: Theory, Research and Practice in LifeLong Learning
by Aida A Nevárez-La Torre, TESOL Program, Fordham University

I am very pleased to announce that we have a new release in the adult education series at Information Age Publishing: The Power of Learning from Inquiry Teacher Research as a Professional Development Tool in Multilingual Schools by Dr. Aida A Nevárez-La Torre of Fordham University.Power of learning (Image)

Dr. Nevárez-La Torre is director of the TESOL and Bilingual programs at Fordham’s Graduate School of Education and has extraordinary experience as a researcher and practitioner in the field. This book is truly a one of a kind human interest, life transformation and professional development research book rolled up into one compelling volume.

Last week iwas describing to some of my graduate students as a powerful demonstration of how working alongside of educators/faculty and guiding them to explore action resaerch, providing a safe space for questioning assumptions, can lead to radical transforamtion. That this book reveals that storeis- in the particiapting teachers voices- how they came to the awakening, and grew to recognize and resist the oppression which they had been silenced previously. Biligual and TESOL educators are often even MORE overlooked in k-12 systems than adult edcutoars (hard for us to belive it ispossible, but it is true. There are many reaons for this basis and oppression- not only do they serve new immigrants, ELL learners, but they may also be ELL or immigrants. The end result is that may schools do not even attempt ot hide the fact that few resources, recogniztion or concern are exercisesd towards these students, teachers or resources.
