Dr. King as Commencement Speaker and Award Recipient

On May 11,2010, Dr. Kathleen P. King heads to the Philadelphia suburbs to begin a week of celebrations in her homecoming to Pennsylvania Institute of Technology.

On Wednesday she will be receiving an Outstanding Alumni award from the two-year college where she studied engineering and also began her career teaching in higher education (1990). Especially exciting for King is that the awards breakfast will also honor 2010 graduates who are receiving awards.

She says,

Taking my place among lifelong learners honored by Pennsylvania Institute of Technology (PIT) during 2010 Commencement is a distinct honor. It is staggering to realize my higher education career began here 20 years ago when I enrolled for classes to merge my science background (BA in Biochemistry Brown University) with my new-found passion for computing. This was in the days of MS-DOS 5.0 and MS-Windows 3.1 just emerging on the scene. Much has changed in 20 years, but the need for continuing learning is stronger than ever. I applaud the dedication of all the PIT 2010 award recipients and graduates.

Saturday May 15, 2010 is the commencement ceremony for Pennsylvania Institute of Technology (PIT). Dr. King has the distinct honor of being the 2010 commencement speaker to share a vision of opportunity, hope and accomplishment with the graduates, families, friends and faculty. Kathy shares her perspective,

PIT is Hope and New Opportunities. Graduation at PIT is always an energizing and emotional event. This is a college which is dedicated to new opportunities, new hopes and possibilities. every graduate has their personal story of overcoming obstacles and dreams which seemed impossible until they encountered this unique learning community. My national and international experience which has developed since I moved on from PIT in 1997, continues to increase my appreciation for the work and impact of this institution and dedicated faculty.

PIT gave me great gifts during my six years there:

I continue to say that I met some of the best college teachers in the world at PIT.

My appreciation of open enrollment grows with each year.

I frequently recall and use examples of PIT students who risked much to step up to the challenge of entering a college career as first generation college students and breaking past patterns of oppression.....

In two back to back sessions, Dr. Kathy King was met by standing room only crowds at the 2010 NCEA Conference in Minneapolis MN on April 6, 2010.

Dr. King says,

My first exciting co-presentation with math teacher Thomas Hottinger on podcasting and vodcasting had a standing room only crowd. I figured, OK teachers of varying technology expertise are catching on to great potential of using these strategies. Terrific.

And we had a wonderful session- interactive, good questions. Plus, Tom and I complemented each other so well: The professor with 5 years of podcasting talking abut strategy, big picture and pedagogy... The math teacher talking about what worked and didn't work with his classes, and how to guide students, etc...

So I was very excited and I skipped the long lunch lines to get to my next session early and found the room jam packed, people sitting in the aisles and flowing out the doors already. I went over to check the sign to make sure it was my room! Indeed it was.

Dodging bodies and book bags I made it to the front of the room to set up. It is the first time I have EVER started a session early, but there was no reason to wait.. no one else could fit in the room. We had every available spot, sat......

Peters and King Debut a Success at AACE SITE 2010 Conference in San Diego

The room was packed and the people roaring, they would not leave, they wanted more... and this was after 3.5 hrs of workshop time at a professional development conference.

On March 28, 2010, 35 educators from around the globe convened on the 21st century global learning workshop co-facilitated by Dr. Laurence Peters and Dr. Kathleen P. King. And the word is that teaching and learning might never be the same because of it.
