As a vibrant follow up to the episodes about technology and politics,
this week Kathy and Paige interview the founder of
Skewz.com, Vipul Vyas. The discussion ranges from the use of the site and online dialogue to help people understand the slant/agenda of media sources, developing critical thinking and supportiung dynamic dialogue across political, religious and different constituency groups.
As we discuss the site’s purpose, dynamics, working, participation, and creation, we enjoy also exploring the possibilities and accomplishments in educational settings now and for the future:
From Poli Sci to US Government, free speech, to multiculturalism, Democracy to Social Studies, Linguistics to Cross Cultural Communication, would a fabulous laboratory, microcosm, dataset and most of all online community to watch and within which to participate
How wonderful is that for one website to offer teaching and learning for students of all ages (under 18 with supervision)?
Skewz is a place to read conservative and liberal stories selected by users. See them rated, engage in dialogue and look at the world from different perspectives…
This online community is a terrific example of how Transformation Education LIVE! believes online resources and Web 2.0 technologies for participation can connect so many different parts of our lives. In fact their tagline says, “Join the community and vote to reveal the skewz in the news!”
Excerpt from Vippul’s work creating Skewz.com:
“I think Skewz is relevant because so many people are getting news and information about the political debate online these days. According to a recent Harris Interactive Poll, 22 percent of Republicans and 20 percent of Democrats regularly read blogs. Independents are the ones slightly more likely to read political blogs, at (26%). I think with so many people turning to the web for information, it’s important for them to know how what to look for and how to interpret all the information.”
