Ep 29 Writing Works Wonders- Author or Interview Kristin Smedley

Ep 29 Writing Works Wonders- Author or Interview Kristin Smedley

Show Notes, Episode 29, Kristin Smedley Interview

Co-hosts: Cheryl McNeil Fisher and Kathy King

An extraordinary interview with an author who’s mission is to change perceptions of blindness around the world. An effervescent advocate, author and innovator, Kristin Smedley, author of the popular book on NLS/BARD “Thriving Blind,” joins Cheryl and Kathy for a unique author interview on Writing Works Wonders. Kristin is the mother of two young men who are blind. The success of her book has led to a worldwide community of those affected by blindness including parents, children and more. In this interview, you will also discover more about the newest initiatives regarding navigating college, and entrepreneurship, and the upcoming release of her newest book.

About Kristin Smedley
With a fun-loving spirit and energetic personality, Kristin Smedley has guided her life in the direction of a career in teaching. However, when her two sons were born blind, Kristin walked away from the classroom to teach her sons how to navigate a world they could not see. This is part of the reason Kristin’s mantra is “Life is funny… sort of.”

With the right foundation and a multitude of resources, her children have achieved
more than most sighted children their age. Kristin has seen first hand that the grim statistics in the blind community, 70% unemployment rate, 14% college graduation rate, and 60% living in poverty, are a direct result of lack of access to the right tools and resources. She has dedicated her life to changing those statistics and making sure no other Mom has to sit isolated in devastation over a rare eye disease diagnosis.

In 2011, Kristin launched a nonprofit to fund research and resources for children living with the rare eye disease her sons have, CRB1 LCA/RP. Her efforts have sparked international research, OSA legislation, and support communities, Kristin has done a TEDx Talk in New York City to change perceptions of blindness.

In 2019, Kristin published her first book called Thriving Blind: Stories of Real People Succeeding Without Sight. It achieved #1 New Release and Best Seller on Amazon for paperback and Kindle and morphed into vi rant online support communities,

Co-hosts: Cheryl McNeil Fisher and Kathy King

Benefits of podcasts for authors? What are they, how can you do it? Can you podcast if you are blind or low vision? Absolutely, listen to how Kathy and Cheryl accomplish it! Why podcasts versus upload audio to websites? Steps to get started and where will you “travel” as a podcaster?

How and why did Writing Works Wonders start podcasting? We were a Zoom call, then we started podcasting! Why did we do it and how do we do it as authors who are visually impaired?

Kathy’s podcasting technical and hosting experience began in 2005. She had several podcasts in 2005-2010 which spanned hundreds of hours and many millions of listens.

BONUS: Cheryl and Kathy share multiple ideas about how authors may use podcasts to cultivate their followers and reader audience.

More about Kathy King

Dr. Kathy King not only has vast experience in podcasting, but also is an award winning author and editor publishing over 30 books and 200+ articles/papers. She is a retired professor of instructional technology and adult learning. As a series editor with Information Age Publishing and in her private coaching, she guides authors through the writing and publishing processes. “Kathy” is a popular keynote and conference speaker, mentor, and writing consultant. As a professor for 30+ years, she was a researcher, administrator, and educator.

In 2019, Kathy began her journey with vision loss. A small, silent stroke (NAION – an optic nerve condition) left her with low vision. At this point, she was unable to read or see a computer screen. In 2021, another rare episode of NAION reduced her sight further. Although she is now legally blind, Kathy enjoys writing, virtual volunteering, podcasting, public speaking, and coaching authors.

Ep 18 Writing Works Wonders – Round Robin Creativity

SHOW NOTES

Topic: Round Robin Story Telling
Co-hosts: Cheryl McNeil Fisher and Kathy King

Something completely different! Fun and informative. Don’t miss the stories we spontaneously created using a special technique. From llamas to bananas, see if you can anticipate the twists and turns these authors synthesized on the fly.

—Round Robin Storytelling – Chain Storytelling –Progressive Storytelling! —

Yes, they use all those names, but the point is pretty much the same, the next person/author adds on more to the story. And we had great fun using this technique to exercise our creativity and explore new skills to add our repertoire. Let’s see where the stories take the group! Drama, mystery, and humor included.

We began with a story prompt from different genres each time. We also experimented with different guidelines for the storytelling. Are you ready to laugh? Click play!

YOU CAN STILL PARTICIPATE!

Ep 3 Writing Works Wonders – Author Interview: Michael Gandy

Show Notes

Author Interview: Michael Gandy

Co-hosts; Cheryl McNeil Fisher and Dr. Kathleen P. King

Cheryl McNeil Fisher talks with author Michael Gandy about his unique aspect of writing and publishing. His books are serialized internationally, and amazingly, they are free! Each year he sells several of his print books. Every cent of profit is donated to the Talking Book Library Services through the Mississippi Friends of Handicapped Readers.

Michael is an engaging storyteller. He will take you on his journey from childhood to how he became interested in working with the blind. His respect for the people he met made him want to assist and enrich their lives, which inevitably led him to his position as Director of Rehabilitation for the Blind in Mississippi.

After retiring, he began narrating his books in the Mississippi Talking Book Service studio. Michael has written over 100 books. Before the pandemic, he narrated 70 books, so he doesn’t have too much further to go unless he keeps writing more books! Join us for an inspirational and informative interview with Michael Gandy.

Ep 2 Writing Works Wonders: Workshop: Character Development Part 2

Ep 2 Writing Works Wonders: Workshop: Character Development Part 2

Show Notes Episode 2

Character Development Part Two

Co-hosts: Cheryl McNeil Fisher and Dr. Kathleen P. King

Character Arcs
What changes have your characters made during your story?
What will your proposed characters do?

We know from our own lives that people change. As authors, we need to create the twists, surprises and vivid sweeps of transformation which capture readers. Youngsters, teens, young, mid-life, and mature adults all have unique stages, conflicts and opportunities for dramatic or gradual change. What will happen in the unfolding journey of your character? And how will you keep the arc moving?

Writing and Discussion
1 Select a character arc of someone you’ve read, or you’re developing.

2 Jot down notes about their development and the arc. Timeline, critical events, etc.

Traits
In your writing, are there character traits you find more or less universal? What do you find is necessary to make them come alive to your reader?
What do you find you need to include? Speech style? Accent? Specific jargon or word choices?
Mannerisms? Behaviors? How they walk, their gait?
characters. Enjoy the discussion and examples.

Revelation
How do we reveal character traits in our stories? What strategies do you use to weave them into our writing? Examples of techniques include metaphor, flashbacks, a journey, lessons, when they described described by others, etc. Think of your favorite work and consider what our authors suggest.

TRIVIA
What if you were to play trivia as your character? How many of these questions could you answer? Give them a try.
What is your character’s?

  • Birth place?
  • Occupation?
  • Biggest secret?

Favorite or worst

  • Pet
  • Vacation
  • Type of food
  • Neighbor or friend
  • Sport
  • Hairstyle
  • Technology
  • Type of movie
  • Music style
  • Reading material!

Our authors have interesting insights from this activity.

Ep 1 Writing Works Wonders: Workshop: Character Development Part 1

Show Notes Episode 1

Character Development – Part One

Co-hosts; Cheryl McNeil Fisher and Dr. Kathleen P. King

Many different areas to choose from, but one which requires a lot of work, focus, and organization is character development.

TOOLS:
1- Name generators or purposeful name choice
2- Character tables/charts to Document, organize and guide the development of details of your characters, and keep them straight!!

Have you read books with inconsistencies? For instance, unless your character dyes his Hair: Its color can’t suddenly change colors from scene the scene.

Today, we will use some fun prompts to flesh out a character of your choice.

1- Think about what you would like to write or you have in progress. It might be any genre- fantasy, biography, history, mystery, etc.

2- Next, Identify one of your characters .. write down his or her name. If you don’t already have such a character, choose a name and basic identity. Like, Catherine the engineer, or Sherlock the detective.

3- Who would like to share the name and identity they will work on today?

4- PROMPTS ** Likes, dislikes and why- Describe one thing your character likes and the reason. Then list one thing they dislike and the reason. ** A strength or Extraordinary ability- List and describe one strength or Extraordinary ability of your character. Then briefly name the formative events that led to its development or discovery ** Physical characteristics— Imagine you’re meeting your character for the first time. Write a description of his or her physical characteristics and one mannerism you observe.
