Ep 21 Writing Works Wonders – Podcasting for Authors

Show Notes for Podcasting for Authors

Featured: Kathy King is Center Stage
Co-hosts: Cheryl McNeil Fisher and Kathy King

Benefits of podcasts for authors? What are they, how can you do it? Can you podcast if you are blind or low vision? Absolutely, listen to how Kathy and Cheryl accomplish it! Why podcasts versus upload audio to websites? Steps to get started and where will you “travel” as a podcaster?

How and why did Writing Works Wonders start podcasting? We were a Zoom call, then we started podcasting! Why did we do it and how do we do it as authors who are visually impaired?

Kathy’s podcasting technical and hosting experience began in 2005. She had several podcasts in 2005-2010 which spanned hundreds of hours and many millions of listens.

BONUS: Cheryl and Kathy share multiple ideas about how authors may use podcasts to cultivate their followers and reader audience.

More about Kathy King

Dr. Kathy King not only has vast experience in podcasting, but also is an award winning author and editor publishing over 30 books and 200+ articles/papers. She is a retired professor of instructional technology and adult learning. As a series editor with Information Age Publishing and in her private coaching, she guides authors through the writing and publishing processes. “Kathy” is a popular keynote and conference speaker, mentor, and writing consultant. As a professor for 30+ years, she was a researcher, administrator, and educator.

In 2019, Kathy began her journey with vision loss. A small, silent stroke (NAION – an optic nerve condition) left her with low vision. At this point, she was unable to read or see a computer screen. In 2021, another rare episode of NAION reduced her sight further. Although she is now legally blind, Kathy enjoys writing, virtual volunteering, podcasting, public speaking, and coaching authors.

Something completely different! Fun and informative. Don’t miss the stories we spontaneously created using a special technique. From llamas to bananas, see if you can anticipate the twists and turns these authors synthesized on the fly.

—Round Robin Storytelling – Chain Storytelling –Progressive Storytelling! —

Yes, they use all those names, but the point is pretty much the same, the next person/author adds on more to the story. And we had great fun using this technique to exercise our creativity and explore new skills to add our repertoire. Let’s see where the stories take the group! Drama, mystery, and humor included.

We began with a story prompt from different genres each time. We also experimented with different guidelines for the storytelling. Are you ready to laugh? Click play!

Author Interview: Michael Gandy

Co-hosts; Cheryl McNeil Fisher and Dr. Kathleen P. King

Cheryl McNeil Fisher talks with author Michael Gandy about his unique aspect of writing and publishing. His books are serialized internationally, and amazingly, they are free! Each year he sells several of his print books. Every cent of profit is donated to the Talking Book Library Services through the Mississippi Friends of Handicapped Readers.

Michael is an engaging storyteller. He will take you on his journey from childhood to how he became interested in working with the blind. His respect for the people he met made him want to assist and enrich their lives, which inevitably led him to his position as Director of Rehabilitation for the Blind in Mississippi.

After retiring, he began narrating his books in the Mississippi Talking Book Service studio. Michael has written over 100 books. Before the pandemic, he narrated 70 books, so he doesn’t have too much further to go unless he keeps writing more books! Join us for an inspirational and informative interview with Michael Gandy.

Ep 2 Writing Works Wonders: Workshop: Character Development Part 2

Ep 2 Writing Works Wonders: Workshop: Character Development Part 2

Show Notes Episode 2

Character Development Part Two

Co-hosts: Cheryl McNeil Fisher and Dr. Kathleen P. King

Character Arcs
What changes have your characters made during your story?
What will your proposed characters do?

We know from our own lives that people change. As authors, we need to create the twists, surprises and vivid sweeps of transformation which capture readers. Youngsters, teens, young, mid-life, and mature adults all have unique stages, conflicts and opportunities for dramatic or gradual change. What will happen in the unfolding journey of your character? And how will you keep the arc moving?

Writing and Discussion
1 Select a character arc of someone you’ve read, or you’re developing.

2 Jot down notes about their development and the arc. Timeline, critical events, etc.

Traits
In your writing, are there character traits you find more or less universal? What do you find is necessary to make them come alive to your reader?
What do you find you need to include? Speech style? Accent? Specific jargon or word choices?
Mannerisms? Behaviors? How they walk, their gait?
characters. Enjoy the discussion and examples.

Revelation
How do we reveal character traits in our stories? What strategies do you use to weave them into our writing? Examples of techniques include metaphor, flashbacks, a journey, lessons, when they described described by others, etc. Think of your favorite work and consider what our authors suggest.

TRIVIA
What if you were to play trivia as your character? How many of these questions could you answer? Give them a try.
What is your character’s?

  • Birth place?
  • Occupation?
  • Biggest secret?

Favorite or worst

  • Pet
  • Vacation
  • Type of food
  • Neighbor or friend
  • Sport
  • Hairstyle
  • Technology
  • Type of movie
  • Music style
  • Reading material!

Our authors have interesting insights from this activity.

Show Notes Episode 1

Character Development – Part One

Co-hosts; Cheryl McNeil Fisher and Dr. Kathleen P. King

Many different areas to choose from, but one which requires a lot of work, focus, and organization is character development.

TOOLS:
1- Name generators or purposeful name choice
2- Character tables/charts to Document, organize and guide the development of details of your characters, and keep them straight!!

Have you read books with inconsistencies? For instance, unless your character dyes his Hair: Its color can’t suddenly change colors from scene the scene.

Today, we will use some fun prompts to flesh out a character of your choice.

1- Think about what you would like to write or you have in progress. It might be any genre- fantasy, biography, history, mystery, etc.

2- Next, Identify one of your characters .. write down his or her name. If you don’t already have such a character, choose a name and basic identity. Like, Catherine the engineer, or Sherlock the detective.

3- Who would like to share the name and identity they will work on today?

4- PROMPTS ** Likes, dislikes and why- Describe one thing your character likes and the reason. Then list one thing they dislike and the reason. ** A strength or Extraordinary ability- List and describe one strength or Extraordinary ability of your character. Then briefly name the formative events that led to its development or discovery ** Physical characteristics— Imagine you’re meeting your character for the first time. Write a description of his or her physical characteristics and one mannerism you observe.

Website Accessibility: Screen Readers and the Blue Icon.

A blue circle with a person in the center- this is the Icon which indicates accessibility menuWeb progress for diversity and inclusion! Not only have we updated our website to be more accessible for people with varied visual abilities, but also we offer our visitors a free virtual test drive and share how we made it happen.

Quite a few of our readers are no doubt familiar with ensuring websites are accessible for screen reading programs and apps. Screen reader programs “read” the screen aloud, hence the name!

Many people who are visually impaired or blind use screen readers to navigate computers, tablets and smartphones. Similarly, perhaps you have seen “Voiceover” features in your devices – these embed such screen reader capabilities!

Step one in increasing a web site’s accessibility is to use a screen reader compatible platform. The next step is to review the site through special accessibility sites and correct any identified issues.

Accessibility icon- person in blue circle

What is the new icon in the upper right corner?

However, not all people with visual limitations use screen readers. Therefore, step three in our website update included adding an icon and menu to address color blindness, “low vision”, or other conditions which make it difficult to read and navigate traditional websites.

In the upper right hand corner of each page of the website, there is now a round, blue “digital accessibility icon”. When it is clicked, a menu appears which allows users to adjust the website’s font size, contrast, colors, etc.

Go for a “Test Drive”!

Go ahead and click the round, blue “accessibility icon”. (Think of it as a virtual test drive!) You might discover that changing one or more of these features creates a more pleasant reading and browsing experience for you. After all, we spend a lot of time online, and our eyes get tired!

Please let us know if there are other accessibility needs we can address.

Pay it Forward

If you have a website, please explore accessibility needs and accommodations. If WordPress is your platform, you can follow all three steps with fabulous plugins. There are several very easy and effective ones from which to choose.

Research about Academic Authors Presented at AAACE

Research about Academic Authors Presented at AAACE

In October 2018, Dr. Kathleen P. King and doctoral student Lauren Maroon presented the first results of their extensive study of the Textbook and Academic Authors Association members regarding book authoring development and experiences. Their work was shared and discussed at the AAACE Conference (American Association for Adult Continuing Education) held in Myrtle Beach, SC.

Authors Under Construction” was the title of the session!

AAACE logo
2018 AAACE Conference

The research is based on a mixed methods study conducted this summer to explore the experiences, challenges, supports and development of book authors related to academic fields. Both an online survey and interviews were conducted to collect a rich body of data providing abundant insight into diverse experiences. Specific themes have been identified and prove informative for new and experienced authors, and those seeking to support/develop them.

The research team is submitting a journal manuscript to share the findings with a wider audience. Watch for more news soon!

From the TAA web site:

The Textbook & Academic Authors Association (TAA) provides professional development resources, events, and networking opportunities for textbook authors and authors of scholarly journal articles and books…TAA offers a wide array of resources and benefits to help you navigate your path to writing success. These benefits include publication grantswebinars, a monthly print newsletter, and a variety of networking opportunities available through CONNECT, TAA’s online member community.

Presenting at International Adult Education Conference

Presenting at International Adult Education Conference

Dr. King at CIAE 2018

This morning, 10/2/2018 I had the wonderful  experience of presenting and facilitating discussion at the Commission of International Adult Education Conference. The international scholars were thoroughly engaged with the research developed by Masha Krsmanovic (PHD Candidate), Dr. Kathleen P. King, and Dr. Lou Sabina entitled,;

“Where is the Equity? Different states, different hurdles and rules for international students: Affordability of and access to U.S. Higher Education for international students”

In brief, this study reported the unexpected results of our recent research regarding potential equity issues in admissions of international students in U.S.public higher education institutions.

Context: While recent studies have revealed that due to many factors, the U.S. has experienced an unprecedented decline in attracting new international students (IIE, 2017) in higher education. In addition to obvious changes in the political climate and competition, national and institutional barriers contribute to this phenomenon. Other countries, specifically Australia, Canada, and England are seeing their international student population increase while the United States continues to show a consistent decline over the last 10 years. Moreover, the cost of attendance, fees, and additional charges applied to foreign students, vary by dozens of thousands of dollars on institutional or state levels (SHEEO, 2008; US News, 2012).

The Study: Examining international student residency classification issues from a critical race theory perspective, this study included an institutional survey and quantitative analysis of institutional, state, and federal policies. Our objectives were to (1) examine the costs associated with access to undergraduate and graduate education, (2) identify potential challenges to equal opportunity and access of international students, and (3) provide recommendations for increasing the affordability and enrollments of this student population.

This short paper is being developed into a much more detailed manuscript for journal submission.

Dr. King’s 2017 Book

Technology and Innovation in Adult Learning equips practitioners to further adult learning and shape the future of the field, while providing a rich perspective for classroom inquiry and research.

“If you teach adults and are thinking about, or are currently using digital tools with your learners, this book is for you. King has done it again! “

Kathy Peno, Ph.D., Professor of Education, Adult Education, University of Rhode Island

Adult learning is on the rise, and there is no mistaking technology’s role; whether they’re learning with or about technology, today’s adult learners come with unique sets of needs and skills that demand specialized approaches. Traditional pedagogical techniques don’t transfer directly, and learning technology requires its own unique approach to development and use.

A comprehensive exploration of technology’s role in adult learning

Technology and Innovation in Adult Learning introduces educators and students to the intersection of adult learning and the growing technological revolution.

Anyone working today with adult learners in this rapidly evolving digital age will benefit from Technology and Innovation in Adult Learning. With twenty years of pioneering the discourse on integrating technology in adult learning and teaching, Kathy King brings a cutting edge understanding to this book.

Roger Hiemstra, Professor Emeritus, Syracuse University

Building on current trends and research in technology and its use, each chapter illustrates the need, opportunities, and examples of current and future technologies that scaffold adult learning, and provides comprehensive coverage of both current and emerging challenges.

Uniquely integrating adult learning and technology for global and digital learners, Technology Innovation in Adult Learning is a timely, comprehensive, theory/model based and strategies/discussion rich book. Kathy King’s distinctive expertise and years of research and teaching in both adult learning and technology fields provides readers not only with a wide angle to view a new vista of applying learning theories for adult lifelong learning needs, but also with applicable use of instructional technology tools and examples. .. It is a must-have reference book for anyone who works with adult learners in formal, informal, and non-formal learning environments.

Dr. Qi Sun, Associate Professor, Program Coordinator of Adult Learning & Adult Education; Co-Editor, Adult Education Quarterly (AEQ), The University of Tennessee, Knoxville

Written by an internationally recognized expert in the field, Dr. King’s book explores the theory, research, and practice driving innovation in both adult learning and learning technology, and illuminates a powerful approach to recognize and leverage these opportunities.

NUIG and the Emerald Isle

NUIG and the Emerald Isle

National University of Ireland at Galway invited Dr. King for a special event  in December 2016

As an international expert in transformative learning, Dr. King was asked to lead a dissertation viva  (final oral defense).

The dissertation utilized her Learning Activities Survey to examine the learning experiences  of adult students from Kosovo who studied in the UK, and then returned home to seek employment.

The NUIG viva was an enriching collaboration among NUIG scholars and Dr King.  I also emjoyed spending some of my winter holiday in Ireland.

Transforming Education, Educators and Students With Technology

Transforming Education, Educators and Students With Technology

Article published in Inside Fordham 9/1//2006

By Peter Catapano

“Theory is wonderful, but if it remains by itself it becomes stale. It gathers its lifeblood in research and practice.” — Kathleen King

If back in the day, say 1995, you were unreasonably distraught when you were forced to trade your Smith Corona for Microsoft Word, or maybe pulled your hair out trying to figure out how to use e-mail, you probably could have used the advice and support of Kathleen P. King, Ed.D., professor of education at Fordham University.

As former director of the University’s Regional Educational Technology Center for Professional Dr King 2008Development (RETC), and recent director of the Graduate School of Education’s program of Adult Education and Human Resource Development, King has made it her mission to help educators cope with rapid change, technological and otherwise. Her core work, founded in the principles of a theory called “transformative learning,” of which she is a major proponent, seeks to turn challenges—or “disorienting dilemmas”—into opportunities for both learning and personal growth. Transformative learning, as King puts it, “describes how people react when they come across difficult points in their life, how they cope and what they learn from it.”

And, as she is quick to emphasize, “Teachers are learners, too.”

King’s approach to adult education takes in several disciplines, most notably technology. She is a techie by nature, well versed in computing and at ease with the general onslaught of technological innovations that have changed the way we live and work in the past 15 years. The resources available at RETC reflect that: podcasts for teachers, computing testing and certification, online education, and a host of other resources devoted to helping teachers and other adults to innovate, teach, and learn. It is a source of knowledge she believes educators sorely need.

As an educator, King said, “technology will throw you into these conflicts,” posing challenges, and sometimes crises. “In the ‘70s,” she says, learning about new technologies was, “a nice thing to do. Today, it’s survival.”

King has a book out this year, Harnessing Innovative Technology in Higher Education: Access, Equity, Policy, and Instruction (Atwood, 2006), edited with Joan K. Griggs. In its conclusion, written with Susan Biro, Ed.D., associate director of RETC, King says, “In the process, we learn that the pathway [to integrating technology into higher education] is not linear, and that as we are learning about technology along the way, we are also learning about our learners, our organizations, and ourselves.” An insight that might have been gleaned from King’s own non-linear career.

There is a spiritual component to King’s work. Before she began her academic life in the early 1990s, King served as a nondenominational missionary in New England. In her research, she is keen to draw lessons from the religious and ethical traditions of many cultures. A recent article she authored looks at transformative learning from the viewpoint of Confucianism.

Her record of accomplishment since she came to Fordham in 1997 is sort of disorienting itself: she has secured, and now oversees, more than 20 grants, several million dollars worth, for the University; she has received several awards for her work in the field; she has authored dozen of articles for journals; and edited, contributed or authored dozens of books, many on technology and learning. Her latest, written with Victor Wang, Ed.D., California State University, Long Beach, Comparative Adult Education Around the Globe, includes observations of educators from Asia and the Middle East, and will be published in both Germany and China in a few weeks.

The idea of transformative learning, she said, “has been dominated by Western interpretation. We need to open it up to our colleagues around the world.”

King—who has a bachelor’s degree in biochemistry, a master’s in theology, and a master’s and doctorate in education—sees adult education as a perfect fit for someone like herself, naturally drawn to and inspired by a number of different ideas and disciplines. “The theme running through all these interests,” she said, “is how adults learn and change their lives.”

She also believes she ended up at the right university to undertake this work. “Fordham is a very good fit for me. They value theory and research, but also put great value on people and practice.”

Though King’s unconventional ideas have often forced her to take a radical stand with her colleagues, she remains committed to the idea of helping others learn and change for the better.

“I am not to here to promote my political view,” King said. “We are trying to provide a platform where people can step forward into their voice. Transformative learning is about opening up opportunities.”
